When museums decide to create a digital experience, one of the first questions is often technical: should they develop a mobile app or use a Progressive Web App?
Both options can support digital interpretation, but they create very different experiences for visitors and different operational implications for cultural teams.
What is a Progressive Web App?
A Progressive Web App, or PWA, is a web application that works in the browser but can offer an experience similar to a native mobile app. Visitors do not need to download it from an app store. They can open it through a link, QR code, NFC tag or other access point.
For museums, this is a major advantage. The beginning of the visit is a sensitive moment. If visitors are asked to download an app, create an account or wait for installation, many will simply give up.
A PWA reduces this friction and allows the experience to start quickly.
Mobile apps and their challenges
Native mobile apps can offer strong performance and access to device features. However, they usually require more investment, more maintenance and separate versions for different operating systems.
They also depend on app-store approval processes and updates. For a museum or cultural institution, this can create unnecessary complexity, especially if the goal is to provide interpretation during a short visit.
The download requirement is also a major barrier. Many visitors do not want to install an app they may use only once.
Why PWAs often make sense for museums
PWAs are particularly suitable for visitor experiences because they are easier to access, easier to update and compatible with many devices. Content can be managed centrally, and improvements can be made without requiring visitors to install updates.
PWAs can also support offline capability, multimedia content, maps, audio, multilingual content and accessibility features, depending on how they are built.
Choosing the right approach
The best choice depends on the goals of the institution. A native app may be justified if the museum wants a long-term loyalty tool with frequent use outside the visit. But for most on-site interpretation experiences, a PWA can be more practical and more accessible.
The key question should not only be “which technology is more advanced?” but “which technology creates less friction for visitors and is easier for the institution to maintain?”
For many museums, Progressive Web Apps offer the right balance between usability, flexibility and sustainability.
